What you are looking at here is a 1978 Mustang II King Cobra, which was
originally silver with a red interior. I bought the car in July 2003 when I
was fifteen years old for $2,400, which wasn’t bad for a first car. When I
first got the car, the body was painted a bright orange while the rest of the
car( bumpers, scoop, etc.) was painted a flat black. The car was in pretty
good shape overall, but the paint could have been better. The black bumpers
almost looked white up close, and sanding lines could be found everywhere in
the orange paint. After two years of that horrible paint I decided that it was
time for a change, and on Black Friday 2005 I began the process of repainting
the car. For every weekend for five months, in-between school and work, I
prepped the car. Virtually everything was taken off the car and prepped inside
and out: doors, hood, glass, you name it, no expense was being spared in this
paint job. Both bumpers were replaced with reproduction parts since the rubber
began to crack, but other than that the car was pretty sound. The entire car
was primed twice and sanded all by hand using a block, and on Easter Sunday I
finally painted it. What came out of the paint booth that morning was
definitely worth the work!
The car was painted the DuPont Hot Hues color Warp Speed Blue, while the trim
pieces were painted gloss black. The engine in the car from what I know is
basically a rebuilt stock motor, save for a mild camshaft, Edelbrock Torker II
intake, and Holley 650 Double Pumper carb. The four speed transmission in the
car was also rebuilt, and a few other modifications include a custom
Flowmaster dual exhaust and air shocks in the rear. Finally, the car sits upon
a set of brand new 15 X 7 American Racing Ansen Sprint rims and BFGoodrich
Traction T/A’s that bolted up with no problems at all. The interior’s not
worth mentioning except for the new dash inserts, that’s going to be this
winter’s project.
