Car of the Month - July 2007
Matt Strickland's 1977 2+2

Here are some pics of my 1977 hatchback. I purchased the car from my former boss.It had been sitting for approximately 13 years from the time I had last seen it.The car was originally green with white /green interior. It had a 4 cylinder /automatic with a 6-3/4 rear.

After 2 short years and alot of work I am proud to say that with the exception of squirting the paint, I completed all the work myself. The car was totally stripped of doors ,fenders, wiring, moulding, suspension, you name it. Body work began with sandblasting, the addition of a roll cage, tying the frames together, shaving the door handles. gas cap, antenna, and cowl vents. I used fiberglass bumpers and modified the front with a cutout. I modified the front header panel with the help of a 74 doner to give it a shelby look, and added a cowl hoodscoop. The stripes are painted and the cobra II stripes on the bottom are stickers.

The suspension has been totally redone. All new in the front with modified fox body springs, and tubular arms. In the rear I added a crossmember, ladder link bars ,coilovers, and yes an 8.8 3:73 posi rearend which hooks like a drag car.

I redid the interior in black and blue. Now for the good part. The engine is a .030 over 302 block massaged and stoked to 347 cubes . New crank, rods, kieth black pistons and file fit rings. 205 cc intake runner aluminum heads top her off with 202" valves , a shelby intake and holly 750 vac secondary carb.Operating the valves is a competition cam with 288 degrees duration and 512" of lift, custom pushrods and alum. roller rockers. For spark I am using an MSD with Mallory unilite dist.

Estimated HP is in the 405 range. While I have not run it yet to get an official time, my primary purpose was for it to be a rice killer. I really enjoy driving it ,( handles great)and it gets looks even sitting in the garage
