Car of the Month - July 2005
Tim Grahl's 1977 Cobra II

This 1977 Mustang Cobra II was manufactured in September 1976 and is a 1977 model year Cobra II. The Cobra II Package was added by Motortown Corporation, a company that Ford used for the Cobra II package until mid year 1977. The car was assembled in Dearborn, Michigan and shipped to Davenport, Iowa. Options installed on the car included Air Conditioning, AM/FM Stereo Tape player, 302 V-8 engine, Four Speed Manual Transmission, Pivoting rear side windows and lacy spoke wheels.

The car was purchased on March 11, 2000 in Dubuque, Iowa. The previous owner was the second owner. It was trailered to its new home in Redford, Michigan the same day. The car was in great condition, but the engine compartment was not show ready and that would become the Winter 2000 project. A few changes were made to the car shortly after it was purchased. The snakes on the fenders were the aftermarket plastic stick-on emblems instead of the Cobra II decals. As soon as I was able to find NOS snake decals, the emblems were removed and the correct Cobra II decals were put on the front fenders. After researching the options that were originally on this car, I decided that the rear window louvers would have to be removed to restore the car back to its original state. They were removed from the back window in August 2000, just before the Team Mustang event at Ford World Headquarters, the day before the Woodward Dream Cruise.

The Mustang has been in numerous shows and event over the past 5 years usually getting a trophy or award. The trophies are not the best experiences though. The Cobra II has been photographed in many unique places and with a few famous people. As can be seen by some of the photos, it has been on display several times at the former Dearborn Assembly Plant, Auto Alliance (for the launch of the 2005) and has been photographed with Bill Ford Jr. standing next to it.

I have had a lot of fun working on the car and taking it just about everywhere I go. I wouldn't trade my Cobra II for any other Mustang nor would I part with it unless I was down to my last penny. My first car when I started driving was a 1977 Mustang II Fastback, and as my wife has stated, I will probably be buried with this Cobra II.
