Gary Allen Stys' 1976 Ghia

During the 80's you could buy a Mustang II from $50.00 to $500.00 in somewhat running condition. A 74' Mustang II, 4 cylinder, 4-speed coupe was the hobby of mine and some neighborhood friends. The car I speak of is long gone, but I luckily came across this 1976 Ford Mustang II Ghia earlier this year.

This Gold 1976 Ford Mustang II Ghia is a V6, Automatic with A/C. It is a one owner, "Grandpa Special". It was purchased by it's original owner in October of 1975. The Mustang was driven for over ten years when he retired from work and contemplated trading in the car for another.

Fortunately he decided to update and maintain car including a new V6 engine, rear axle, velour seat inserts, paint and 1/4 vinyl top, over a few year period in the late 80's. The Ghia was driven regularly around town.

In the mid 90's the Ghia went into the garage as the owner was no longer able to drive. It was stored for almost five years when the son of the original owner inherited the car. Due to lack of driving and maintenance the car needed all of the basics, but still ran strong. Over a few years, many of the mechanical and safety items were repaired or replaced. The son loved the car and kept it in the family as a memory to his dad.

As an anniversary gift, the son's wife bought him a GT Convertible. Unable to keep multiple vehicles, he listed the 76' Ghia on Collector Cars Autotrader where I came across it.

I was excited to find that the Ghia was For Sale locally in my area. I have found that most of the "original condition" Mustang IIs are in California or Texas. I met with the family, who were reluctant to sell, and purchased the Ghia that week.

In possession of the car I started a six month restoration project which included: breaks, seals, steering, suspension, transmission, interior and finally a new metallic gold Maaco paint job. Due to the fact that the car was in original condition, the restoration was easily completed.

As the new proud owner of this 1976 Ford Mustang II Ghia, I have received many compliments from friends, family and passersby. Everyone I have spoken with that has seen the car restored has some sort of a story of owning one or knowing of a person that had owned one. I have taken my Ghia to a Mustang Rally in Orlando, where my car got some attention as the only Mustang II there.

I am glad that I have had the opportunity to become once again familiar with such an interesting and unique vehicle as the Mustang II. I drive the Ghia on weekends and enjoy the compliments and double takes from onlookers. I always believed that the car of the mid 70's was an under appreciated "Little Jewel." This is not the case of my 1976 Ford Mustang II Ghia.
