MUSTANG II manufacturing facilities

THE DEARBORN ASSEMBLY PLANT

Production of the 1974 Mustang II is scheduled for Ford's Dearborn Assembly Plant (DAP), in the Rouge Complex. DAP has a history of Ford Motor Company firsts behind it: the first Model A was built there in January of 1928, the first Thunderbird was built ther in 1954, and the first Mustang rolled off the line in 1964.

In preparation for producing this all-new car, DAP underwent a multi-million dollar renovation and retooling. All of the latest manufacturing methods are incorporated to provide maximum manufacturing quality. Increased automation and more efficient production methods are used throughout.

Basic changes to the plant include a new soft trim assembly line, a new body manufacturing line and a new paint line. Noteworthy is the new paint line which incorporates Ford's electrocoating primer process combined with an improved cleaning and phosphating operation. Details are described uner the Mustang II body section.

THE LIMA ENGINE PLANT

Ford's Lima, Ohio Engine Plant was selected to produce the 2.3 liter overhead cam four-cyliner engine that will be standard equipment in the Mustang II.

This engine will be the first mass-production American-made engine using metric measurements. It also will be the first American built four-cylinder Ford engine since the 1932 Model B.

The plant was enlarged 35 percent to accommodate the new engine. Included in the expansion is Ford's longest engine assembly line -- a line that also is the fastest and most thoroughly automated of any in the Ford Motor Company. Again, the latest state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques are extensively applied. Additional details are described in the Power Teams Section.
