2.3 LITER OVERHEAD-CAM FOUR-CYLINDER ENGINE

Standard engine for all Mustang II models except the sports-orientated Mach 1 is an all-new four-cylinder engine displacing 2.3 liters (140-c.i.d.).
The Mustang II engine is a wholly metric-dimensioned design -- the first U.S.-built automobile engine to be constructed to this internationally accepted measurement system.
The new 2.3 liter engine will be built by Ford at the Lima, Ohio engine plant which has been enlarged and modernized.

2.8 LITER V-6 ENGINE

A 2.8 liter V-6 engine is standard on the Mach 1 and available with all other Mustang II models. This powerplant is built in Cologne by Ford of Europe and is an increased-displacement version of their 2.6 liter engine. Because of its V-6 cyliner arrangement, it features a compact configuration and smooth performance.

STANDARD TRANSMISSION

The standard transmission with either Mustang II engine is a four-speed manual unit, fully sychronized in all forward gears. The shift lever is floor-mounted.
This is the first U.S.-built transmission to utilize a single rail shift mechanism like that of many European designs. Other features include an aluminum housing and wide-spaced gear ratios.

OTHER DRIVELINE FEATURES

The aluminum die-cast clutch housing includes heavy strengthening ribs and a wide attaching flange. A special high bolt pattern is used to fasten the housing to the engine block. This design provides a rigid coupling to combat driveline vibrations. In addition, there is a runed rubber mount isolating the transmission extension from the vehicle structure. This mount incorporates a rebound restriction to control shake in the driveline.
