'74 Car Merchandising NEWSFLASH
MUSTANG II IS ECONOMICAL

It is powered by a gas-saving overhead com four-cylinder engine, a new American-built engine specifically designed for Mustang. The 2.3 litre engine is engineered with emission regulations in mind. It has cross manifolding and hydraulic valve adjusters for a lifetime of quiet operation. Current Ford test indicate that the average gas mileage which can be expected on base Mustang II equipped with the 2.3 litre engine and 4-speed standard transmission is 20.0 mpg. (This is simulated city suburban driving). This compares to the average mileage on 1965 Mustang with a 6-cylinder, 3-speed standard transmission of 19.6 mpg. This improvement is made despite the addition of the emission equipment previously noted. The 2.8 litre V-6 engine standard for Mach 1 and optional for Mustang Ghia and base 2-door is comparably thrifty.

     Mustang II has many options
     not available on Pinto:
  • Power rack-and-pinion steering
  • Power disc brakes

  • Digital clock
  • Styled steel wheels
  • Picardy velour interior option
  • Luggage compartment trim option

MUSTANG II and PINTO are SEPERATE Entries in Seperate Markets

Information has it that competition may refer to the 1974 Mustang as another Pinto. Some prospects may also express such a thought. Keep in mind that Mustang II stands on its own as an all-new car, designed and engineered to be responsive to the dmands of a specific market segment. Everything your customer can see on the Mustang displayed in your showroom is absolutely unique to Mustang, as are many features that cannot be seen. Only a few of the latter, chassis items such as front wheel spindles, brake discs and brake master cylinder, universal joints and such parts, are common to both Mustang and Pinto. These parts represent approximately just 10% of the total parts which make up Mustang. As a matter of fact, Thunderbird uses approximately the same percentage of Torino parts. Your prospect is hardly likely to consider Thunderbird an "upgraded" or "warmed-over" Torino.
Here are just a few of the major Mustang II features that are not found on Pinto:
