BRAKES

Mustang II is equipped with new, Ford-designed manual front disc brakes.
The new brake is of floating caliper design which automatically centers itself over the rotor when the brakes are applied. As a result, pressure is applied equally through the brake pads to both sides of the rotor.
The new caliper is extremely rigid and the brake lining is less compressible than that of the former Mustang disc brake. This gives a firm pedal feel. The fact that the caliper is mounted directly to the anchor plate also helps in this respect.
Servicing is simpler with this new design. It has less than half the number of parts of the former disc brake. To replace linings, a technician must remove only one screw and a retaining key to release the caliper. Then the anti-rattle clips and both brake pad assemblies can be removed.
A single piston, 1.6 inches in diameter, is used in each caliper. The total lining area of the inner and outer lining pads is 11.8 square inches, acting on a 9.3-inch diameter rotor.
Rear brakes are self-energizing drum-type, featuring nine-inch drums with 1-3/4-inch-wide linings. Power-assisted brakes with a tandem booster are optional with all Mustang II models.

TIRES AND WHEELS

The standard wheel size for Mustang II is 13-inch diameter with a five-inch rim.
Styled steel wheels are standard on the three-door 2+2 and Mach 1; conventional wheels are standard on all others.
The styled-steel wheel design has four radial spokes backed by slotted "windows". They are painted black and two-tone argent. "Deep dish" forged aluminum wheels with 5-1/2-inch rims are optional on all models.
